Desowen Ointment treats the redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort of various skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema. Desowen is in a class of medications called topical corticosteroids. It works by activating natural substances in the skin to reduce swelling, redness, and itching.

Use Desowen Ointment as ordered by your doctor. Read all information given to you. Follow all instructions closely.

• Use on your skin only. Keep out of your mouth, nose, and eyes.
• Wash your hands before and after use. Do not wash your hands after use if putting this on your hand.
• Clean the affected part before use. Make sure to dry well.
• Put a thin layer on the affected skin and rub it gently.
• Do not use coverings unless told to do so by the doctor.
• Do not put on the face, underarms, or groin area unless told to do so by the doctor.

Before using Desowen Ointment, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you are allergic to it, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in desonide topical products. 
• You plan to take prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products. 
• Be sure to mention the following: other corticosteroid medications and other topical medications.
• If you have or have ever had diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, or liver problems,
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Desowen Ointment may cause side effects. However, many people have no side effects or only minor side effects. Call your doctor or get medical help if any of these side effects or any other side effects bother you or do not go away:

• Burning.
• Stinging.
• Dry skin.
• Signs of a common cold.

Do not use Desowen Ointment anywhere on the face unless your provider has specifically told you to do so. The skin on your face is more sensitive and likely to get unwanted side effects, so you want to use it only when necessary.

How long should you use Desowen Ointment?

Desowen Ointment is mainly for short-term use, so it's best to stop using this medication once your condition is under control.
