Santyl Ointment is used to help the healing of burns and skin ulcers. Collagenase is an enzyme. It works by helping to break up and remove dead skin and tissue. This effect may also help antibiotics to work better and speed up your body's natural healing process.

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the Santyl Ointment exactly as directed. To use:

• Wash your hands before and after applying Santyl.
• Santyl is usually applied once daily. You may need to clean the wound and reapply the ointment if the treated area becomes soiled.
• Do not share Santyl with another person, even if they have the same symptoms you have.
• Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.

Before using Santyl Ointment, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you are allergic to it and other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. 
• If you have an infection in the affected area,
• If you have or have ever had a bleeding condition that makes it difficult for you to form clots, including receiving anticoagulant medications,
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

Santyl ointment may cause serious side effects, including:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat,
• worsening skin conditions, and
• signs of infection (fever, redness, swelling)

Get medical help immediately if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

The most common side effects of Santyl include:

• redness of the skin around the treated area
