Vectical ointment treats mild to moderate plaque psoriasis in adults and children two years of age and older. It is a vitamin D analog and works by helping to stop the production of extra skin cells that may build up and form scales on the skin and by decreasing the activity of immune cells in the skin.

Use Vectical ointment exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets.

• Please wash your hands before and after applying this medicine unless you are using it to treat psoriasis on your hands.
• Apply a thin layer of the medication and rub it in completely.
• Do not cover treated skin areas with bandaging or plastic.
• Vectical is for use only in areas of psoriasis. Avoid getting it on healthy skin areas.

Before using Vectical ointment, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you are allergic to it, other medications,
• Other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you plan to take. 
• Be sure to mention any of the following: calcium supplements; vitamin D supplements; or thiazide diuretics, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide, and metolazone.
• If you have or have ever had kidney stones or any condition that affects the calcium level in your blood,
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. If breastfeeding while using calcitriol topical, do not apply it directly to the nipple and areola (the colored area around each nipple).

Vectical ointment may cause serious side effects, including:

• hives,
• difficulty breathing,
• swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
• blistering, or severe redness, itching, or other irritation of treated areas,
• worsening symptoms or no improvement in psoriasis,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• loss of appetite,
• constipation,
• increased thirst or urination,
• lack of energy,
• tiredness,
• muscle weakness,
• confusion, and
• bone pain

The most common side effects of Vectical ointment include:

• high levels of calcium in your blood or urine,
• itching,
• skin irritation, and
• abnormal lab tests

Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away.
