Benicar, also known by its generic name Olmesartan, is a drug that helps lower blood pressure and improve blood flow. It is often used to treat high blood pressure and can be used in adults and children over 6 years old.

How does Benicar work?

Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist. This substance keeps blood vessels from narrowing. It helps blood vessels relax, which helps lower blood pressure. Olmesartan blocks the natural angiotensin II chemical from raising blood pressure and narrowing blood vessels.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor and pharmacist. Read the prescription label and leaflet before consumption.

• Take the oral medication with or without food
• Keep taking Benicar even if you feel well because high blood pressure does not have any symptoms.
• Your blood pressure will need to be checked often while taking this drug.
• Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture

Before taking Benicar, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

• Liver disease
• Congestive heart failure
• If you are on a low salt diet
• If you are taking supplements that contain potassium
• Dizziness or lightheadedness may occur after the first dose of this medication. Make sure you know how you react to Benicar before you drive or use machinery.
• Do not take other medications that may increase your blood pressure, including over-the-counter drugs for colds, hay fever, or sinus problems.
• If your child is taking this medication, check with your doctor if they experience severe or continuing nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. These drugs may cause some people to lose too much water, which can lead to low blood pressure.
• If you have diabetes, do not use Benicar if you are taking any medications that contain aliskiren.

The common side effects of Benicar include but are not limited to:

• Dizziness
• Possible allergic reaction to the drug, which causes hives, trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, and tongue

Call your doctor at once if you experience:

• A fast heart rate
• Swelling in your hands or feet
• High potassium levels
• Little or no urination
• A light-headed feeling, as if you might pass out
• Severe, chronic diarrhea with weight loss that occurs months to years after you start taking this medication

Can pregnant women take Benicar?

Do not use this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Stop using this drug if you become pregnant and tell your doctor. Harm to the unborn baby can occur if this drug is taken in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
