Exelon Oral Solution is used to treat dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's. It improves mental function by increasing the amount of a certain natural substance in the brain.

Exelon oral solution is usually taken twice per day. Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose.

Take Exelon with food. Measure liquid medicine carefully using the dosing syringe or a medicine dose-measuring device.

You may swallow the liquid medicine directly from the syringe or mix the medicine with a small glass of water, fruit juice, or soda. Stir and drink this mixture within 4 hours after mixing. Add a little more water to the glass, swirl gently, and drink immediately.

After using the syringe, wipe the outside of it with a clean tissue and put the syringe back into its protective case. Close the medicine bottle using the child-resistant closure.

Before taking Exelon oral solution, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

• If you have ever had an allergic reaction to the oral solution, other medications, or its ingredients,
• You plan to take prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products,
• Be sure to mention the following: antihistamines; aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen; bethanechol; ipratropium; and medications for Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, irritable bowel disease, motion sickness, ulcers, or urinary problems,
• If you weigh less than 110 lb (50 kg) if you have or have ever had asthma, ulcers, abnormal heartbeats, or other heart, liver, kidney, or lung disease,
• If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.

The most common side effects of Exelon oral solution include:

• upset stomach,
• nausea,
• vomiting,
• loss of appetite, and
• weakness

Exelon oral solution may cause serious side effects, including:

• severe or ongoing vomiting or diarrhea,
• loss of appetite,
• weight loss,
• bloody or tarry stools,
• cough with bloody mucus,
• vomit that looks like coffee grounds,
• lightheadedness,
• tremors,
• restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw or neck,
• seizure,
• painful or difficult urination,
• severe skin redness,
• itching,
• skin irritation,
• feeling very thirsty or hot,
• inability to urinate,
• heavy sweating, and
• hot and dry skin

Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of Exelon. For more information, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Why consume Exelon oral solution with food?

It's recommended to take Exelon oral solution twice a day with meals. Food helps your body absorb the rivastigmine slowly, so you don't have very high medication levels right after you take your dose.

Can Exelon oral solution cause hallucinations?

Hallucinations can also happen if you overdose or have too much of the medication in your body at one time.

What side effects can Exelon oral solution cause?
