What is Maxitrol Eye Drops?

Maxitrol Eye Drops consist of neomycin, polymyxin B, and dexamethasone. It treats eye infections and inflammation, including conjunctivitis and chronic anterior uveitis.

Neomycin and polymyxin B belong to the class of medicines known as antibiotics. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Dexamethasone is a steroid medicine used to relieve the redness, itching, and swelling caused by eye infections.

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the Maxitrol Eye Drops as directed. To apply the Maxitrol Eye Drops:

  • Wash your hands before using eye medication.
  • Tilt your head slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  • Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze a drop into this pocket.
  • Close your eyes for 1 or 2 minutes.
  • Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after two days of treatment.

Before Taking Maxitrol Eye Drops

Before using Maxitrol Eye Drops, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially for: other eye problems (such as glaucoma), if you are allergic to neomycin, polymyxin, dexamethasone, or aminoglycoside antibiotics or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. 

After you apply Maxitrol Eye Drops, your vision may become temporarily blurred. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity requiring clear vision until you can safely perform such activities.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. 

Maxitrol Eye Drops Side Effects

Maxitrol Eye Drops may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have the following:

  • Blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain, or seeing halos around lights;
  • Swelling, redness, severe discomfort, crusting or drainage (may be signs of infection);
  • Pain behind your eyes, sudden vision changes; or
  • A wound that will not heal.

Common side effects of Maxitrol Eye Drops may include:

  • Blurred vision; or
  • Mild eye irritation.
