What is Optivar Eye Drops?

Optivar Eye Drops (antihistamines) to relieve the itching of allergic pink eye. It works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.

Follow all directions for Optivar Eye Drops as directed on your prescription label. 
To apply the Optivar Eye Drops:

  • Wash your hands before using eye medication.
  • Tilt your head slightly and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze a drop into this pocket. Close your eyes for 1 or 2 minutes.
  • Use only the number of drops your doctor has prescribed.
  • Please do not touch the tip of the eye dropper or place it directly on your eye. A contaminated dropper can infect your eye, leading to serious vision problems.
  • Store Optivar Eye Drops in an upright position at room temperature.

Before Taking Optivar Eye Drops

Before using Optivar Eye Drops, tell your doctor and pharmacist:

  • If you are allergic to Optivar or any other medications,
  • Prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you take,
  • If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while using azelastine, call your doctor.

Optivar Eye Drops Side Effects

Optivar Eye Drops may cause serious side effects. Stop using Optivar and call your doctor at once if you have the following:

  • Severe burning, stinging, itching, or eye redness after using this medication;
  • Eye pain;
  • Trouble breathing, or
  • Fever, chills, sore throat, flu symptoms.

Common side effects of Optivar Eye Drops may include:

  • Blurred vision (temporary);
  • Headache; or
  • A bitter taste in your mouth.
